Profibus 是唯一的全集成H1(过程)和H2(工厂自动化)的现场总线解决方案，是一种不依赖于制造商的开放式现场总线标准。采用Profibus标准系统，不同的制造商所生产的设备部须对其接口进行特别调整就可通信，Profibus可用于高速并对时间苛求的数据传输，也可用于大范围的复杂通信场合。

Profibus根据应用特点分为Profibus-DP ， Profibus-FMS ， Profibus-PA三个兼容版本。其中，Profibus-DP(H2)是一种经过优化的高速通信连接，专为自动控制系统和设备级分散I/O之间的通信设计的，可用于分布式控制系统的高速数据传输，其传输速率可达12Mbit/s，一般构成单主站系统。
Profibus的特点为可使分散式数字化控制器从现场层到车间级网络化，该系统分为主站和从站。主站决定总线的数据通信，当主站得到总线控制权(令牌)时，没有外界请求也可以主动发送信息。从站为外围设备，典型的从站包括输入输出设备，控制器，驱动器和测量变送器。他们没有总线控制权，仅对接收到的信息给予确认或当主站发出请求时向从站发送信息。
现场总线是以单个分散的、数字化、智能化的测量和控制设备作为网络节点，用总线相连接，实现相互交换信息，共同完成自动控制功能的网络系统与控制系统。它适合于替代价格昂贵的 24V DC和 4～20mA测量信号平行传输线路。在节省线路与设备的同时，也为武钢炼铁厂的以太网系统提供了现场级的控制功能。其原理如下图2所示：
